Azur Villa

A peaceful retreat by the sea.  Ideal for up to two couples or a family of five

After graduating in 1996 I decided to travel to Australia from the UK by land and sea for a year.  Passing through Turkey I was mesmerized by the country and especially the beauty of its Turquoise coast to the south.  Promising myself there and then to have a home along the coast for my retirement, I decided instead to go ahead prematurely in 2001 at the age of 27.

A month of travelling ensued, looking for something special away from the established tourist towns.  My search finally came to an end at a stretch of coastline expertly concealed behind some hills on the outskirts of Demre town (pop 20,000).  Click here to see the LOCATION of Demre.                                                                                                                                                                  Demre is situated between Kas (45km) and Finike (30km) and attracts a large number of visitors for its captivating Lycian tombs at Myra, its Church of St. Nicholas (pre-cursor to Santa Claus) and the nearby Sunken City, a Roman town which actually sunk into the sea due to an earthquake.   Though largely a working, agricultural town, Demre offers many supermarkets, good places to eat, fruit and vegetable markets and internet cafés.  And it only takes 10 minutes to get there from Azur villa by car or scooter.

Azur villa is a peaceful, 3 bedroom semi-detached house (sleeps 5) situated immediately by the Mediterranean sea. The property is part of a housing development of about 30 other similar properties.  These are predominantly owned by Turks who live in Istanbul and Ankara and use their place as a holiday home.  I have found that only a handful are ever occupied at one time and for this reason you hardly ever see anyone around.  There are a few other houses popping up in the vicinity but otherwise the coastline remains pristine, untouched and a joy to see.  

While the rooms of the property are compact (see dimensions below) the main advantage of Azur villa is undoubtedly its exceptional location by an exceptional stretch of coastline.  The development has its own private swimming spot.  Whenever you feel like swimming, you only have to walk 50 metres and you will find yourself in the open expanse of the Mediterranean sea.  Snorkelling, fishing and diving is excellent here (equipment provided at Azur villa).

The house is built on three levels:

On the ground floor you will find the kitchen (2.5m x 2.5m), lounge (3m x 5.5m), a large terrace (5m x 2.5m) and a WC (1.6m x 1m).  The modern kitchen is equipped with gas hob, marble tops, mini-oven, microwave, electric kettle and a large fridge freezer.  The lounge has a sofa bed (sleeps 2), satellite television and guide books on Turkey and the area.  Outside is a spacious terrace with stunning sea views with table and chairs to accommodate up to seven people.            

The first floor comprises 2 bedrooms and a bathroom.  One bedroom (5m x 2.5m) has a TV with VCR player and selection of films, a Playstation 2, a wardrobe, chest of drawers and a small, private balcony.  The other bedroom (3.25m x 3.25m)  has a small wardrobe with shelves.  Both bedrooms have 2 x single beds (easily converted into doubles), air conditioning and stunning sea views.            

The second floor has a small single room (2.75m x 2.25m) with built-in wardrobe.  The room leads onto two large terraces, one (3.75m x 3.25m) facing the sea with exceptional views and the other (4.5m x 2.25m) facing inland.  

Azur villa is ideal for those looking for maximum peace and quiet.  You will see no crowds during your stay and you will barely see any cars.  When you wake up in the morning, you will hear birds singing and the gentle sound of the waves.  Amble down to the Rock and have a dip in the sea.  Have a barbecue on the terrace and watch the sun go down in the distance.

Meet Mehmet, the friendly caretaker, who will bring fresh bread and your English language newspaper to your doorstep every morning.  If you want to relax and unwind, then Azur villa is for you.
